Expectant Prayers ®

Jennifer Jo Weiss

Garden Guest

On this rainy Tuesday,  I thought I would share a few pictures with you all of a guest we found at our house last week.   It's a praying mantis!    We seem to have them every year (which Grandpa Grimm would have said was a sign that your house was blessed).    Our home in Nashville even had them!

This little mantis was first found on our screened in porch.  It must have crawled through one of the holes in the screen and then couldn't find it's way out.  After gently capturing it, we placed it in the flowers under the birdbath.  I figured that it was probably thirsty, so I had Pete fill up the birdbath and water the flowers before its release.  Sure enough, it sat there and drank the drops of water off the leaves on the marigolds for a long, long time!     I have to say that the mantises are one of my favorite garden guests... some of our other guests are actually pests (like the ones who have eaten most of my tomatoes this year).    Every time we find a praying mantis at our house, it's a thrill.

Now that it is officially FALL, it won't be too long until the fragrance of summer is completely gone from the yard, but here are some late bloomers that are still producing beautiful blooms....
