God STILL Heals!

"For I am the Lord who heals you."  Exodus 15:26b

Today's post comes to us with permission from my father-in-law, Ben.  For quite a while, he has been suffering with kidney stones and dealing with the symptoms and pain associated with the disorder.  Kidney stones are reportedly one of the most painful disorders of the urinary tract.  The above picture shows his kidney stone (on the left) next to a normal sized Daisy BB.  The BB Container is visible in the background.

To begin my entry today, I wanted to share some information on what I found out about kidney stones.

What is a kidney stone?  A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms from crystallization of excreted substances in the urine. The stone may remain in the kidney or break loose and travel down the urinary tract.  A small stone may pass all of the way out of the body, but a larger stone can get stuck in a ureter, the bladder, or the urethra. This may block the flow of urine and cause great pain.  There are different of types of stones that can form from a plethora of sources.   They are:  calcium stones, struvite stones, uric acid stones, and cystine stones.

Am I at risk?  It is estimated that 10% of all people in the US will develop a kidney stone at some point in time.  It is also reported that currently one million people a year are treated for kidney stones.

Ben and Patty Weiss

THE STORY:    Ben has suffered quite awhile with what we believe were 2 kidney stones formed around the same time.    They say that for men, it feels like they are giving birth.   In fact, one day he was in so much pain he stopped over at my house because he couldn't make it home and he lives just about 3 blocks away!  My mother-in-law was gone at the time, too.  There wasn't anything I could really do either...except pray...  He went pale and weak;  nausea striking him immediately.   After about an hour or better, he began to have some relief.  We think that stone was probably passed and was the cause of his great discomfort.

That episode was several months ago, and he went quite awhile without any more symptoms...that is until recently when this one reared it's ugly head.    He was in SO much pain for weeks and weeks.  I'm not understating that.  Finally, the doctor decided (over a week ago) that he was not going to pass the stone in it's current state. He ordered a laser treatment to break up the stone so that it could be passed.  (By the way, by the looks of the stone, it doesn't appear that the laser worked much if any- but I'm not a stone expert!)

Following the treatment, we all sat around waiting to hear that the stone had passed... but nothing happened.  Then Sunday night came.

Ben went up for prayer during the Sunday evening service to pray for the situation.   Folks, let me stop right here and say that prayer WORKS!  I hope that you have opportunities to pray at your church often.  It's not that God can't answer our individual prayers  (because He does), but when you make a public declaration that God is able to heal you by going forward to be prayed for AND gather with two or three (or more at church) to bring your petition before God... things move.  The Word tells us that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains... so He can certainly move a stone, right????

God is faithful and true.  He deserves our praise and glory!

I am happy to report that Ben passed that stone WITH EASE AND WITHOUT ANY PAIN shortly after the prayers went up. That stone wasn't moving and we believe that God dislodged it so it could pass.
It reminded me of the verse, "Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."  Matthew 18:18.   The stone was loosed and moved.

Patty told me that she measured the stone at about 5mm.   This is NOT a coincidence, but a testimony to the fact that God still heals in 2007!  Ben and Patty took the stone to the doctor's office so it could be biopsied and all the while spoke the praises of God.  The doctor didn't say much, but a nurse was receptive to the fact that God heals!   Friends, God can use doctors and medicines to heal; they are tools.  Ultimately, however, HE is THE HEALER.  The one who fashioned our body is more than able to bring healing to it.  His name is higher than any other name, and in this instance the thing that could be named was "kidney stones".

I hope you'll join with me today in giving God praise and continual thanks for His mercies that are new every morning.    And if you are in need of healing, call on the name of the Lord today.   We will be standing with you in prayer!

Blessings today, friends!

Here is some additional information I found on Kidney Stones.  It's informative and worth reading...

Preventing Kidney Stones

According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Foundation, the best ways to prevent kidney stones are the following:

  • Drink more water. Up to 12 full glasses of water a day can help to flush away the substances that form stones in the kidneys. Ginger ale, lemon-lime sodas, and fruit juices are acceptable.
    • Limit coffee, tea, and cola to one or two cups a day. The caffeine may cause a rapid loss of fluid.
      • Consult your physician regarding dietary modifications.
        • Medications may be prescribed to prevent calcium and uric acid stones from forming.
