Back when Pete and I first began pastoring here in Kansas City, we got one of those personalized license plates. They were all the rage back then, you know. We tried to think of something cleaver that would express our Christian beliefs, so we thought long and hard. Finally we came up with something that seemed to be pretty interesting. We got the plates and put them on our car.
Hey, before all this technology stuff, we had to think of creative ways to express ourselves!!! I know... 90's mentality.
One day (several months after we had the plates) we had to go to the local hardware store. As soon as we got out of the car, a man who was in some kind of blue workers suit got out of his utility van and approached us with a huge smile on his face. "Why do you have that on your license plate?", he asked. I had pretty much forgotten about the plates and I glanced toward them, acknowledging that I heard his question. There in bold letters: GOINUP I had to laugh a little that someone actually noticed and was making a point to start up a conversation about the plates! Perhaps our plan worked to draw attention to the Lord. Our plates had become a witnessing tool! Pete and I told the man that we were Christians and that "going up" referred to our belief that one day Christ would come to rapture His church away. We got in a few statements about the tribulation, too. The man still had that goofy grin on his face so I asked him, "Why did you ask about the plates?" I thought he might be a Christian as well or interested in hearing the plan of salvation. He really threw me for a loop when he pointed to a little tiny emblem on his blue work suit that was right above his nameplate which read... ELEVATOR REPAIR.
Tee hee hee hee hee. We all had a good laugh.
You don't have to look around much in your day to see things GOIN' UP. From gas prices to groceries, the cost of nearly everything is on the rise.
Our eyes look toward the heavens as the Space Shuttle Discovery took off earlier this week, taking plumbing repair items to the International Space Station. We have constant reminders that things are GOING UP.
No matter how things look in this world in politics, finances, struggles, trials....we still have a blessed hope - the reality that Christ is coming again!
