Miracles

"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted."
Job 5:9

I have been thinking/studying about miracles over the past few weeks.  What do you think of when you hear the word "miracles"?  Our definition of what actually is a miracle and what is not may change over time or depending on our circumstances.  I think of miracles as anything that defies the normal realm and can only be explained as "supernatural".  Science cannot explain, affirm, or discount miracles.  They are simply beyond explanation, though humanistic minds try!

When I've delivered babies, I've felt like "Wow, this is an amazing miracle".  When groceries mysteriously showed up at our doorstep in an hour of need... to me that was a miracle.  When we prayed for a piano for the kids and within a few hours we had one for free... that to me was a miracle.

I can say that miracles can come in many forms.

Have you ever seen modern day physical miracles?   Cancer suddenly disappearing, hearts that were showing blockages suddenly unclogged, spots on lungs that vanish, or eyes given back their sight?

How can we explain them away?  Why does God perform miracles?  Do they show us that He is God?  Sure they do!  Look at the Biblical examples of miracles.  Jesus made the waves and wind obey him, brought a dead friend back to life, healed leprosy, made blind eyes see, turned water into wine, healed the sick and lame, feed crowds on more than one occasion with just a few fish and loaves, and ultimately conquered sin, hell, and the grave.   The New Testament accounts for the disciples being used in miracles as well - many of which were physical healing.   Even the Old Testament accounts of water coming from the rock, the parting of the Red Sea, the miraculous saving of Noah and his family on an ark, the slaying of a giant with a slingshot,  manna from heaven, the feeding of Elijah, the sun standing still,  and many more!  All of these are amazing displays of God's wonder and power over nature and all realms of life.

Here is another key:  these miracles were also exhibited in response to a need that was beyond what was possible for humans to attain on their own.

If there were more miracles today, do you think that people would be more apt to believe in God?  Why or why not?  You have to remember that in the Bible, right along with the miracles of Moses (as displayed before Pharaoh) there were also false displays of power from Pharaoh's magicians.   I think that in the generation we live in, people may still see the miracles of God and still not believe!

Perhaps the greatest contribution of miracles toward mankind are not what they attain in the present, but what they solidify in the eternal.  Could that be the greatest purpose for miracles?     Miracles do attest to the glory and supremacy of God and awaken an opportunity for the non-believer to believe.  For those who already know the Lord in a personal way, miracles build up our faith and make a deposit that is not easily withdrawn.  When we personally see what God has done for us, we know that we can trust Him; who He is He, what He does, and what He says He will do.

In these days of uncertainty and increasing evil and wickedness, expect God to do great things in our midst.  He wants us to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is GOD.  He will display His splendor for all to see.  Expect miracles.  We have to understand that we serve the God that says, "There is nothing impossible".    He's the same God that performed the miracles in the Bible and He is the same God who is able to perform miracles for you!

Is there something in your life that is overwhelming you and you see no way out?  Are you in need of a miracle today?  Put down your own devices and be reminded today that when you're up against the sea of life, God will part it and make a way.  Remember that God may not seem like He's early, but He's always right on time.

"You are the God who performs miracles; You display Your power among the peoples." Psalm 77:14

Lord,
We praise You for being the God of miracles.  Thank You for what You are doing in the eternal through the works that You perform.  I especially thank You for salvation and knowing that although this life is temporary, You are concerned with every need we face.  You are the supplier and You are the answer to everything.  I ask that You would move in my life in miracles today.  Amen.
