Expectant Prayers ®

Jennifer Jo Weiss

On God's Terms

My daughter sent me this funny commercial a few days ago about "Free Doritos".  It originally aired during the Superbowl.  It reminded me of something I say a lot:

God doesn't operate on our terms, we operate on His.

Now think about how we treat God like that crystal ball!

Some look at God as a  "genie in the sky" (or a crystal ball) waiting to fulfill our every wish.  OR, we make choices on our own without asking God what we should do... then expect Him to go along with whatever we decided.  We really want something, so we make it happen and declare to ourselves, "I think that's a YES!"   We make hasty, snap decisions that can result in devastating consequences.   "No promotion in your future!"

My point is that too many of us fail to seek after God's will and truly put the time in prayer that we need to in order to discover what God's plan for the situation really is.  Even if we really want something and it appears to be an answer to prayer, God may have something different in mind.

I don't care how long you've walked with the Lord, there are still times in life that will require absolute faith because you can't see the step ahead.  I have learned that God is never late, but He may not be early either.  Many times when prayers have been answered, they have come right at the perfect time.

More than ever, we need to be a people that realize we are totally dependent on God for everything in life and trust Him to sustain us, lead us, direct our steps, and make our path clear to us.   And remember: We operate on God's terms, not ours.

"Because you have satisfied me, God, I promise
      to do everything you say.
I beg you from the bottom of my heart: smile,
be gracious to me just as you promised.
When I took a long, careful look at your ways,
I got my feet back on the trail you blazed.
I was up at once, didn't drag my feet,
was quick to follow your orders.
The wicked hemmed me in—there was no way out—
but not for a minute did I forget your plan for me.
   I get up in the middle of the night to thank you;
your decisions are so right, so true—I can't wait till morning!
I'm a friend and companion of all who fear you,
of those committed to living by your rules.
Your love, God, fills the earth!
Train me to live by your counsel."

Psalm 119:57-64
